the madaba plains project

The Madaba Plains Project studies long-term cultural and environmental changes in the highland plateau located between the cities of Madaba and Amman in the country of Jordan. Field research, which usually occurs during five-seven week scientific expeditions during the months of May, June and July, centers on three archaeological sites located on the points of an imaginary triangle with Umayri in the northeast, Hesban in west, and Jalul in the southeast. The project’s overall goal is to advance understanding about the cultural interactions that have taken place through the ages in this frontier region, which is located along one of the ancient world’s most vital corridors of communication and commerce.
