Introduction to Archaeology

Instructors’ Professional Background:
Christie J. Goulart is an archaeology graduate student at Andrews University. She graduated in History from University of Sao Paulo in Brazil in 2002 and worked as the photographer on the 2004 season at Tell Hesban.

I. Course Description:
An introduction to some of the discoveries made by archaeologists and to some of the methods whereby their discoveries are made. Advances in archaeological method and theory over the past 100 years are explained and illustrated.

 

II. Course Objectives:
At the conclusion of this course, the student will be able to:

• Discuss the development of archaeology as a scientific discipline
• Explain how archaeologists find and explore new sites
• Explain how archaeologists go about interpreting remains of the past
• Discuss the ages of humankind from prehistory to present
• Discuss famous sites and treasures of Africa, Europe, Asia, Oceania and Americas
• Explain the difference between anthropological, biblical and classical archaeology
• Discuss current issues and debates in the archaeology of Jordan
• Discuss the role of mapping in archaeology
• Explain how archaeologists do ceramic analysis
• Explain how archaeologists do environmental reconstruction
• Explain what is meant by “archaeological food systems.”

 

 


III. Course Requirements:

Attendance: 3 absences will be excused, after that the grade is affected.

Assigned Readings:  The student is expected complete assigned readings as outlined in section IX below. Readings are due at the beginning of each class.For each chapter reading there is a worksheet to be filled out.

Annotated Photo Album:  By means of a digital camera, document your learning about archaeology through field experiences provided by this class. At the conclusion of the course you should turn in an annotated photo album that documents your experience with learning various techniques (as in Bahn and Rice texts) of archaeology and your observations of camp life and of Jordan’s archaeological past as encountered on tours.

Lectures and Tours : As part of your participation in the field school, you will be expected to attend various lectures and to join several dig sponsored tours. You are expected to come prepared with a pencil and notebook. You are also welcome to make drawings and take pictures as appropriate. Keep track of all handouts and notes based on lectures and tours by gathering them in a folder or notebook binder.

Final Exam: The final exam will be comprehensive, covering lectures and readings of the semester.

VI. Assignment Submission:

  • Students should be pro-active in completing assignments in a timely manner.
  • Notebook journal, lectures/tour binder and portfolio album are due 07 September.
  • It is the student's responsibility to make sure the teacher gets his/her assignment.
